Recovery is an important decision to make to change your life, but recovery is not boring. Yes, you need to keep up with your responsibilities, but you have to let loose a little. Recovery can really be exhilarating and fun. One of the beautiful parts of recovery is remembering and cherishing every moment that you experience. Long gone are the days of waking up unable to remember what you did the night before.

Recovery and abstinence from mind altering chemicals is not a punishment, but rather something to be celebrated. You can enjoy your new sober life and have fun in the process.

Many newly recovering people don’t know where to begin because fun used to be defined by parties, bars, and substance use. Now that you are sober, you need to change your definition of fun.

A good place to start is to create a “fun map.” Start writing down what types of things seem fun for you. The opportunities are endless. After you create a fun map, start making plans to start doing those activities that interest you.

If your preferred activities used to involve alcohol or drugs, you may find it challenging to engage in these events sober. Feeling apprehension is normal in early recovery, but the goal is that the anxiety won’t last forever. Consider bringing along sober friends to sporting events, concerts, and other activities.

Some people may not know where to turn to meet sober people. Don’t be discouraged, your answer can be found in the 12-step rooms or other support groups. Once you begin meeting other recovering people, approach them and try to strike up a friendship. Your fellow recovering peers may be pretty friendly and open to getting to know you.

Once you get connected with sober friends, finding things to do in recovery won’t be as difficult. The 12-step program gives you a sense of community and belonging, allowing you to replace old friends and behaviors with newer, more positive activities. Overall, recovery offers you endless opportunities to enjoy your life gain wonderful memories.
