What Do I Do If I Can’t Think Before I Give My Opinion?

The communication around the world has opened up tremendously with social media being everywhere. Suddenly people have started to say things that they would never say in real life because a confrontation online behind the screen with a keyboard to back them up has given people a new voice. Unfortunately, the basis of the majority of these comments are full of negativity and slander that will remain online until the internet actually breaks.

Now that you are in recovery and trying to live by spiritual principles, you may need to figure out a way to express your opinions by putting some thought behind them first whether you are face to face or writing them on a post online, in a text, or through an email. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself does this need to be said, does this need to be said by me, and does this need to be said by me now? Not only are these some logical guidelines that will work well with your spiritual principles, but you will give yourself some pensive reasons to think before you speak.

Words can harm others

Sure, you can delete a post before anyone has time to view it. Once you say something insulting or send a text or an email that is hurtful, the damage is already done. Even if you apologize, the other person may not forget what your opinion is and fracture the relationship that you once had.

Words can change your impression to others

You were probably taught to not worry what others think of you. If you are ignorantly or unintentionally blasting your point of view without understanding what your statements are actually saying to others, you may be considered someone who is insensitive and intolerable. If you believe in what you are stating, just understand that your words could have negative consequences both professionally and personally if you use negative connotations to prove your point. No one likes a bully.

Words can be avoided

The whole phase your mother probably told you as a child of “if you can’t say something nice, then just don’t say anything at all” may be the best advice she ever gave you. There is no need to tear others down and if you are feeling angry or resentful at someone and just maybe you should run what you want to express by someone before you make a mistake you cannot take back.

By considering to think you before you speak shows that you are trying to become more influential on how you use your words. Saying nothing sometimes is much more effective than having to choke on your words to save face.
