There is an old saying in some recovery arenas that state, relapse is part of recovery. Relapse can indeed be part of recovery. However, relapse doesn’t need to be part of your recovery, nor does relapse always have to be part of the story. Likewise, relapse doesn’t need to be a consistent part of your life in recovery.

There are many, many ways to avoid relapse. You may have heard several tips such as:

Go to meetings
Talk to a sober friend
Talk to your sponsor
Exercise
Eat healthy
Practice mindfulness

These are all fantastic tips for avoiding relapse! Let’s add one. Go on an adventure. A sober, fun, exhilarating adventure. Experiencing new events and challenges will help you to avoid relapse. If you don’t watch out, life can get very routine. Go to work, pay bills, take care of family, go to a meeting, eat dinner, go to sleep, do it all over again.

Being mundane is not what life in recovery is all about. You definitely need to stay connected with your recovery support system and take care of your obligations, but don’t hesitate to throw an adventure into your routine. When you are connected with meetings and sober friends, they may be open to join you on an adventure. Don’t hesitate to ask sober friends to join you.

Adventures different than drugs and alcohol because they are healthy. In sobriety, you remember everything that you’ve done, so the memories that you make in sobriety last forever. This is the beautiful part of recovery. A couple months into the new year, start to think about planning a sober adventure. Check this list out to get you started:

Parasailing
Scuba diving
Sailing
Surfing
Mountain climbing
Traveling
Skydiving
Sober conferences
Take a road trip
Sober cruises
Try a new restaurant every month

The choices for planning an adventure are endless. The world is filled with new opportunities, and now that you are sober you can live your passions. There is an old saying in the 12-step rooms about being able to do all the things you said you were going to do when you were drunk. Carpe Diem. Seize the day.
