Why the Desire to be Right Only Keeps you from Recovering

You may hear about the “desire to stop drinking” or “the desire to stop using” when you attend meetings, but what you should also focus on is the “desire to be right”. Trying to be right all of the time only keeps you from what you are trying to accomplish in your recovery. Putting your opinions, control, and perfectionism aside opens the door for some really beautiful qualities to shine through.

Humility

Being willing to listen and learn from others helps you to portray yourself in much better light and allows you to be open-minded. Right sizing yourself helps you to let your guard down while putting the attention on your sobriety.

Silence

Understanding the aspect of silence does not mean that you just do not talk. Silence in this scenario implies that you can stop talking over people, start listening to the vital and informative suggestions they offer, and silencing your brain to stop thinking about what your “witty and intellectual” rebuttal will be while someone is talking to you. By being appropriately non-vocal, you can show respect to your recovery and the prominent people who are in it.

Growth

One of the things that a recovery program can do for someone who puts some effort into it is elicit some real growth. Most people only want to stop drinking and using although recovery can also assist in revealing character defects that need some work and show you how to get rid of them.

Happiness

Do you want to be right or do you want to be free? This is the question you should ask yourself on the daily. Trying to be a know-it-all does not emote peace of mind but rather causes more emotional and relational conflict than it is worse. Happiness comes from being free and going with the flow which may take some time to adjust to in your recovery, but you deserve to be happy, joyous, and free.

Wisdom

You will gain much more insight, especially in your recovery, by being open to hear what others have to say. Instead of telling others what they should do, taking sound suggestions from others who have walked before you could really impart lifesaving enlightenment and encouragement that will be instrumental for your long-term sobriety.

Being right is a characteristic that you can change with some intentional undertaking in your program. Change is inevitable when you make the effort, so hold your nose and dive into your recovery pool for lasting results.
