Each year on Halloween, you will see kids and adults dressed up as their favorite characters to gather gobs of fun size candy by the handfuls. Fall will be in full swing and there may be a chill in the air along with an excitement that everyone who participates in the fun-packed day will experience. Halloween is considered fun all the way around unless you are using and drinking so much that you cannot appreciate how the day represents trick or treating.

Funny how addiction can also represent a form trick or treating. You think you are treating yourself with the substance of your choice to feel better but eventually you get tricked by the elusive effects that drugs or alcohol produce making you unable to stop on your own. This is why it is in your best interest to stay sober on Halloween, and every other day, because recovery is not as scary as it seems. If you are worried that you cannot stay sober around the normal festivities that surround Halloween, there are some other choices that you can attend to instead.

Go to a meeting

The recommendation is to participate in your recovery as hard as you participated in your addiction. Go to a meeting in your costume if you wish to be around people who you relate to. You can recharge your recovery batteries by hearing the solution in a meeting.

Attend an event

12-Step programs like to celebrate holidays as they come up and like to have reasons to throw sober activities. Picnics, marathon meetings, potlucks, and holiday parties are held to keep people connected outside of the rooms. Try participating in the events that are planned for sober people to fellowship with one another at, so you can see how fun sobriety can be.

Host a Halloween party

When you plan a party, you are in charge of everything including the guest list, the food, and the activities, and the drinks. The control that you will have can better ensure that you can stay sober and be around people who are doing the same.

Visit a pumpkin patch

You may think that pumpkin patches are only to take pictures of kids, but a pumpkin patch can be a ton of fun. Some will offer hayrides, hold a pumpkin decorating or carving contest, a petting zoo, or carnival rides along with some amusement park food.

Do not let your addiction trick you into thinking you are treating yourself. Instead let your sobriety treat you into having a solid recovery so you can enjoy days like Halloween without having to freak out.
