The saying of “everywhere I go, there I am” is a great visual to understand how disparaging addiction really is. Except in a handful of extraordinary cases, there are not too many people who are forced to drink or use. Making the choice to take a drink or use drugs is up to the person who decides to consume the substances whether they know the consequences or not.

Moderate drinkers or marijuana users typically will stop themselves before they get out of hand or will stop altogether if they experience negative ramifications. People who have an addiction to drugs and alcohol will continue with their addictive behaviors even though they know that are causing more harm than good which is how they become the architect of their own destruction.

Addiction causes a domino effect. Taking the first drink or hit sets the ball in motion for anything to happen under the influence. Most people who exhibit deplorable acts from being loaded or drinking will tell you that they would never do what they did sober, and yet they keep reaching for their drink or their drug because they are unable to stop. Instead of getting sober, they keep doing what they are doing because they are unsure of the outcome they will face in recovery.

In the midst of their addictive behaviors, someone who experiences substance abuse may not realize how much wreckage they have created. They cannot fathom how all of their consequences could have been avoided altogether if they had not picked up a drink or drug in the first place. Instead they play victim to how everyone and everything else is the problem rather than understanding that their addiction is the main culprit that initiated everything that happened after their substance abuse.

Get help

Most people will not stop by themselves and need help with detoxification and rehabilitation. When getting the help that is needed, an individual in cessation has a better shot at not repeating the same behaviors that caused their destruction.

Get into action

Through working the steps and talking to a therapist, an individual can identify the reasons that made someone use drugs and alcohol in the first place, such as trauma or abuse. Compiling this information can give them some armor against any triggers that come up going forward.

Take responsibility

By getting honest with what has happened and understanding their part, a person who is dealing with the aftermath of their addiction can be culpable for what has transpired with the help of their therapist or sponsor.

Getting sober does not take away someone’s past transgressions because it takes work to eliminate the memory of them. Being in recovery, however, will give anyone who once was the architect of their destruction a chance to rebuild their greatest masterpiece – staying sober one day at a time.
