The phrase “before you judge a man, you should walk a mile in their shoes” is relatable to visiting the thoughts that spiral inside the head of someone who is struggling with an addiction. No one could possibly understand the torment of substance abuse until they comprehend how addiction completely takes over making them a prisoner within their own mind. Irrational, impulsive, and abnormal thoughts become an everyday part of life.   

Battling an addiction means that not only does a person have to worry about the physical aspect of withdrawal, but they must also deal with the mental side of the obsession. Addiction centers in the mind which begins the whole downhill spiral for a person with a substance abuse disorder. They cannot stop themselves after taking the first drink or drug into oblivion. Once the body gets the taste of the addictive substance, the mind is pressed to keep going because the obsession continues to grow into something uncontrollable without spiritual help.    

Many people who become addicted to drugs and alcohol could have a predisposition to addiction. The thoughts that roll through their mind from childhood on have made them feel as though they were not good enough or not a part of to which drugs and alcohol filled the void for them. What happens during this process is that they initially feel great by the effects of drugs and alcohol impeding their usual negative thoughts. Eventually with the progression of abuse though, they begin to loathe themselves while experiencing shame and guilt. All of the insecure thoughts that were once halted by drugs and alcohol will come back in full force and them some due to being spiritually bankrupt.

Getting sober means not acting on the urges to drink and use as well as finding a way to keep the thoughts that protrude an addicted brain from occurring through the use spiritual means. Attending 12-Step meetings, working the 12 Steps, going to therapy, and using prayer and meditation to connect to a Higher Power are all ways that someone who contends with stinking thinking can prevail. A much clearer perception of solution can help them in spite of the tendencies their mind is provoked with.   

The brain is the overpowering force in the body that can make or break what happens in a person’s life especially when it comes to addiction. Instead of continuing to be a prisoner of the mind with their addictive thoughts, the best thing a person with an addiction can do is to break free with the choice of recovery.
