Myth #1- Treatment is like prison. Some people believe that drug and alcohol treatment is like being locked up in a prison or hospital. The thought of being unable to go anywhere or feel restricted can make drug and alcohol treatment seem scary.

Fact- Treatment is actually a time to care for yourself. Some treatment centers use self care as a way to teach you how to treat yourself. Many treatment centers have amenities such as yoga, meditation, wonderful meals, and much more.

Myth #2- Treatment can’t help me. There are many factors to consider regarding the success rates of treatment. For example, a person’s level of open mindedness and commitment play a big role in the success of treatment.

Fact- Treatment alone is not a cure all for addiction, but treatment is an excellent start. Treatment gives you a break and time for yourself to clear your body and mind. Treatment prepares you for life in recovery and teaches you coping tools for sobriety.

Myth #3-Treatment is boring. A lot of people think that treatment is just going to meetings and staying indoors. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Fact- Treatment is a time out from drug and alcohol use. Treatment allows you to focus on yourself and get to know who you are. Treatment does involve support groups and meetings. However, treatment also involves therapy, learning from other recovering people, and learning how to have fun in sobriety.

Myth #4- Going to treatment will take too much of my time. Some people may feel that treatment will be a waste of time. Treatment is only a about a month long commitment, sometimes longer.

Fact- Treatment is only the beginning of your recovery. Recovery is a daily decision that will make the rest of your life manageable and enjoyable. Try not to think about going to treatment as time consuming. Rather, try to remember that treatment is the first step towards a healthier life and a new you.
