As a new year emerges, most people are provoked by turning over a new leaf in one or more areas that constitutes them to make some resolutions. Someone who is in recovery and wants to grow in their program could use this time of the year to revamp what they are already doing and gain some new insight and stronger tools to keep their sobriety in check. Staying stagnant in a recovery program will only do one thing – keep a person right where they are without broadening their horizons.

Recovery resolutions can certainly make a difference in the quality of your sobriety, if you are willing to put in the work. When you hear the word “work”, you may cringe and start to think, Haven’t I already done enough? The answer to this question is no because even though you work your now, there is no cure for your addiction. You have to continue putting effort into your program for the time you wish to stay sober. This may seem like a tall order, but if you keep working (there’s that word again) on you, you will be amazed before you are halfway through.

Keep current with nightly inventory

Continue to look for where you went wrong in your day and try to fix the mistakes by recognizing them promptly. You can also see where you were of service to others that can also show you what you did right.

Pray and meditate

The mainstay of recovery is finding a power greater than yourself and getting a connection to that power on a daily basis. Using prayer and meditation as a guide to understanding your Higher Power may seem kooky to you, but do not knock it until you try it. Serenity can come from implementing these measures into your daily life.

Put your hand out

Try being of service to someone in need. This does two things. Makes you stop thinking of yourself and start thinking about someone who may require some help. Whether you call 3 newcomers a day or sponsor other people, nothing so much helps your day more than to be kind to someone in need.

The new year may be the motivation that you need to put the oomph back into your recovery. By doing some of the things that are suggested, you may just have your best year yet.
