Why “Pulling a Geographical” May Not Be as Effective As you Think

The saying “wherever I go, there I am” is a concept that is sometimes not considered when someone decides to move. Often those of us who are trying to recover from our spiritual malady of addiction will try to run away from our problems instead of facing them head on. With our character defects glaring right at us, the best idea we have sometimes is to move somewhere else known as “pulling a geographical”.

While this may seem like the greatest solution in the world to help you to get better, the truth is that if you have not sorted out your past and your present, your future will reap the consequences in store for you. Areas which can be affected are financial, legal, relational, emotional, and spiritual making up the core of your daily life. Moving with unresolved issues means that the figurative baggage which has haunted you your entire life will most likely continue into your next residence as well.

There are times, obviously, that you will have no choice to move, but you can do some work on yourself and gather some recovery tools which can assist in making your move much smoother. Instead of being miserable in your existence and putting yourself at risk to relapse, you can decide to make your move more productive.

Work your program.

Using the 12-Steps and therapy can help you with a much-needed inner house cleaning. See why you are running away instead of standing up to your fears. You can typically find a root cause if you willing to take a look at the very things that cause you so much pain. Using a sponsor or therapist to guide you, finding the answers that are keeping you from putting down roots will prove to be beneficial.

Get connected.

The worst thing you can do for your recovery is to waste time finding support. Call central office right away if you need assistance finding meetings to go to. Go to the website they provide to get a meeting list. More importantly, get to a meeting as soon as possible. Otherwise, your addiction will be waiting for a weak moment to take over once again. The fellowship is what started 12-Step programs and is crucial for survival in recovery.

Instead of trying to dodge your addiction altogether by moving, use your recovery to gain the traction that you are craving. Moving will not solve your problems but staying in your recovery will.
