Being in recovery is a gift. When you work a recovery program wholeheartedly, you will see changes in the way you behave and think. More importantly, recovery can change your perspective and give you a sense of purpose.

Awareness and compassion, two words that will be more useful in your vocabulary as you begin a journey of recovery. There is nothing more rewarding and challenging than practicing sobriety and learning to be more compassionate with yourself. Not only will your perspective about your life change, but the way others perceive you will also change.

Your journey of sobriety will not change your personality or who you are on the inside, what will change is your ability to make better life choices. You will also change your ability to love yourself more than you ever imagined. You will be more aware of who you are, what you want out of life, and the journey you are on.

Recovery will also lead to gratefulness. You will be more grateful for every breath you take, for the recovery process itself, and for the salvaged relationships you now have. Your new sense of purpose will involve living life, loving life and being kinder to yourself. All because the new found journey of sobriety has changed your perspective.

Recovery is not about forgetting where you came from. Instead, recovery is about developing a new outlook on life. Recovery allows you to reconnect with family, friends and loved ones. Recovery helps you take responsibility over your life and change your direction. Recovery is also a chance at a new beginning, a new start, and a new outlook.

When you look back over your life and see how recovery changed your perspective and direction, you will be amazed. Recovery is not like flipping a light switch on or off. Recovery is a daily choice. You will learn to wake up every day and choose sobriety. As you finish treatment and enter 12-steps or other types of support, you are making the decision to choose life over death. This in itself is a new perspective and a dramatic change. Welcome to recovery.
