Every year on April 1st, there are tons of pranks and hoaxes that take place on this day making the person who is the intended victim to be called the April Fool. The person who can get one over on another is usually the hero of the day and everyone enjoys the joke unless it has to do with your recovery.

The thing to understand about recovery is that your sobriety is no laughing matter in the sense that it should be taken very seriously and put at the highest priority. Getting your bearings in line within your recovery will take action on your part and can positively affect the longevity of your sobriety one day at a time.

Understand your shame and guilt.

Going through the timeline of your drug and alcohol career can help you to better comprehend the root cause of your substance abuse. Using your shame and guilt as a motivating factor to learn what led you to drink and use can help you when you are in a weak moment. Instead of turning to your addiction to cope, you can use your recovery tools to get out from under.

Understand your relationships.

One of the main reasons that people get drunk and high is to numb out their feelings when it comes to their relationships because they are hard to navigate at times. Work the 12 Steps to see your pattern in your relationships. Talk to a therapist to process your part in the situations that have arisen in your relationships. Learn to bide your time instead of reacting right away. Discovering a different role in your relationships will guide you on how to have healthier ones.

Understand how to love yourself

The truth of the matter is that you will never be able to truly love someone else until you love yourself first. This means using self-care at the highest degree to find out who you are and what you need. Try self-care to relieve stress and to comprehend what makes you happy. Taking care of yourself in this way will lead you to loving yourself in a way you never have before.

Recovery is a serious measure that will fulfill you in ways that you could have never imagined before. Although you will finally find your voice and your laughter again in sobriety, your recovery is no April Fool’s joke.
