The fall months are a beautiful time of the year and are a beneficial time to get ready for the holidays which can be a tough time for many people who are alone or have lost loved ones. Someone who is newly sober will have better advantage to get the foundation of their sobriety solid before they observe the days that could cause them sorrow. Instead of falling into a relapse, a person who struggles with drugs and alcohol should fall into recovery before the often-slippery winter season.

Go out into the world

When you feel sad or lonely, the first thing that usually happens is that you feel like you need to isolate to either keep your sentiments to yourself or to not burden others with being a Debbie downer. Go do something instead of staying in your house with the blinds closed. Fresh air and being around others will be the pick-me-up that you need rather than disengaging from society all together.

Be of service

The best way to make yourself feel better is by putting your hand out to another person. Being the provider of a kind act goes a long way with someone in need. Through helping another you are able to stop thinking of your sorrow and think about somebody else instead. They could actually be helping you more than you are helping them which is what being of service is all about.

Have fun

Do something with friends that you will take pleasure in like attending a high school football game or going to a drive-in movie. There is no reason why you should not have some enjoyment in your life. In fact, the loved ones who are looking down on you would want you to have some fun, so go for it. .

Focus on recovery

In order to stay sober, you will need to get busy in your recovery program. The sadness that you feel most likely comes from the shame and guilt that occurred in the past. The steps and going to meetings will help to relieve the humiliation and pain that you feel towards your loss and suffering which will assist you in moving you onward with your sobriety.

You do not have to feel the way you feel anymore by taking healthy strides to get you through the upcoming holidays. Do activities and actions that make you feel good thus you can continue to heal from your addiction by falling into your recovery.
