Outpatient programs differ from inpatient treatment because you do not reside there, even temporarily. Outpatient programs are still a big commitment and require dedication, motivation, and determination. Outpatient programs generally work best for people who may not be able to dedicate the time to inpatient programs due to work or illness. Generally, outpatient programs work best when you have already completed an inpatient or intensive outpatient program.

Outpatient programs are less restrictive than inpatient or intensive outpatient. There is less time commitment, but the program is still a commitment that requires dedication. Like inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment confronts addiction head on. Outpatient treatment teaches you the skills you need to be sober. With outpatient treatment, you get to put into practice what you learn in sessions and groups the minute you leave for the day.

There is accountability in outpatient programs. You cannot use alcohol or drugs or you counselors may refer you to a higher level of care, such as inpatient. You also need to attend 12 step meetings in your off time. This helps you put into practice what you have learned, as well as provide accountability.

Outpatient programs still emphasize sobriety and skill development as a way to stay sober. Outpatient programs may request that you attend 12 step groups in addition to outpatient. The goal is to help you learn how to stay sober when you are no longer in a traditional program.

Outpatient programs help you face the world. Because you don’t live at outpatient, you are able to practice what you’ve learned immediately. If the counselor suggested a new skill for handling cravings, you can practice the skill whenever you leave the program for the day.

Outpatient programs are a viable option for you if you’ve already completed inpatient treatment and feel like you still need extra support. There is nothing wrong with being honest with yourself.
