Newsflash. There really is no such thing as a functioning addict. Yes, you may be able to hold down a job and keep your finances and family generally in line for a little while. Unfortunately, addiction is a progressive disease. This means that addiction gets worse and the consequences become more severe over time. However, consequences from addiction mean different things to different people so there is no way to predict just how far your addiction can take you.

Even if you stay employed and keep your life in order as best as you can, does this mean that you are a functioning addict? If you have to ask this question, most likely there is something happening with your use that is not good.

Just because you can manage to go to work most mornings, does not mean that you are functioning. Functioning means that you are healthy, happy, and whole. Life has ups and downs, but if your substance use contributes to the down moments, there is a good chance that you are not functioning.

Emotional functioning is just as important as going to work and maintaining your obligations. Alcohol and drugs have a habit of robbing you of positive emotions and joy. Have you considered any of these questions:

  • Do you feel complete
  • Do you feel healthy
  • Are you just making it through the day instead of really living
  • Are you reaching your full potential
  • Are you having depression and/or anxiety

If the answer to these questions is no, then you are not reaching your full potential. If alcohol and drugs have sucked your passion, energy, and purpose from life, then you are not functioning.

Recovery can replace all that drugs and alcohol have stolen. You can have a renewed sense of purpose. You can really live again. You can make new memories without worrying about what you did the night before. You can be the real you again. If you feel that it is time for a change, reach out to an addiction program today. Treatment and recovery will help you learn about addiction and show you how much better life can be when you’re sober.
