If you’re reading this, chances are you have realized that alcohol hasn’t been a very kind friend. Thinking about sobriety and recovery is a step in the right direction. Recovery isn’t always easy, but it is definitely always worth it.

In order to help you choose recovery, you’ll find it beneficial to learn about what exactly alcohol does to your body and mind. The truth is that alcohol is essentially a toxin. Toxins are poison. By abusing alcohol, you are slowly poisoning your body. Be encouraged, because recovery and healing is possible and well worth it.

Alcohol affects every organ in your body, including your skin. Alcohol’s effect on the liver is well known. Alcohol can impair the liver to the point of cirrhosis, which is irreversible. Treatment for alcohol related cirrhosis is difficult because an alcohol dependent person who is not in recovery, is not eligible for organ transplant. Most transplant surgeons feel comfortable for transplant if there is 6 months of sobriety, and the person is involved in a recovery program.

Alcohol also negatively affects the skin, which is the largest organ. Alcohol dehydrates the human body. The first sign of dehydration is more commonly observed on the skin. Signs of alcohol related skin problems are redness, itchiness, dry skin, and wrinkles.

Alcohol is known to negatively affect the kidneys, heart, and brain. Alcohol weakens and destroys the organs and muscles in the human body. Chronic alcohol abuse will wreak havoc on the human body. The best way to combat these effects is to join a recovery program.

Alcohol affects your mood in negative ways, as well. Alcohol can increase negative symptoms of depression and anxiety. Alcohol can exaggerate other areas of human functioning such as memory, concentration, and life enjoyment.

The good news is that the human body is resilient. If you stop drinking alcohol before serious damage has been done, your organs can repair themselves. The effects of quitting alcohol are noticed within days. The skin looks brighter, concentration becomes more clear, and positive mood increases. Within weeks to months of abstinence, body fat decreases, organs begin to repair, and your outlook on life will drastically improve.
