Alcohol seems to be everywhere, but this isn’t necessarily true. The media, movies, and music do a great job at encouraging drug and alcohol use. When you take a step back and see all that life has to offer, you will notice that addiction isn’t as present as it may seem.

Alcohol is socially acceptable. This is a fact that can’t be argued. The after work drink has become part of workplace norms. Alcohol is used to celebrate holidays, accomplishments, and even marriage. Don’t be alarmed because you can celebrate anything without alcohol being present.

If you need to go to an event where alcohol is present, take a sober friend with you. Sometimes you can’t get out of events. Being in recovery doesn’t mean that you need to be hiding in a closet until alcohol is banned either. You can enjoy events where alcohol is present. In early recovery, this may be especially challenging. Taking a sober friend with you helps you stay accountable and also helps you enjoy yourself.

Plan a sober event to attend after your work or family obligation. You can meet your obligations first and then go to an event after where alcohol is not present. With time, you will become more comfortable being around alcohol. You will begin to recognize the destruction that comes with drinking. You will also love and enjoy your sober life.

Don’t isolate. You can’t do this recovery thing alone. You need the support of fellow recovering friends, supportive family, and treatment professionals in your corner. If you need to be around alcohol for work, family, or other functions, be certain to keep your support team on speed dial. This doesn’t mean you’re weak. Keeping your recovery team close simply means that you value your sobriety.

Take care of yourself first and never get lax in your recovery program. There will be days when you don’t feel like going to groups or meetings. Allow yourself to feel this way, it’s okay. Just be sure to acknowledge the feeling and keep pressing forward. When you don’t feel like going to a meeting, go anyway.
