There is No Safe Level of Drinking if You Have Diabetes

Medical professionals estimate that millions of people have diabetes in the United States. Diabetes can cause a host of medical complications on its own. Once you combine alcohol with diabetes, the risks of serious health complications, including death, greatly increase. All in all, there is no safe level of drinking if you have diabetes.

Alcohol consumption negatively impacts diabetes. Drinking alcohol can cause your blood sugar levels to rise or fall to dangerous levels. The rise and fall of blood sugar levels can lead to coma and death. Alcohol also adds empty calories and turns into sugar in your body, therefore making alcohol use dangerous.

Diabetes increases your risk of liver and kidney related diseases. For example, Non-Alcohol Steo- (NASH) is a serious health concern for individuals with diabetes. NASH can cause cirrhosis of the liver and liver and kidney failure. NASH is directly related to diabetes and has nothing to do with alcohol use. If you drink alcohol and already have liver damage from alcohol, your risks of complications and fatality drastically increase.

Alcohol can increase your appetite, which may impact your cravings for sugary and fatty foods. This can negatively impact blood sugar levels. Because of alcohol related calories, weight loss can be a challenge for diabetics who consume alcohol. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, meaning that you may make unhealthy eating choices. Alcohol can also affect insulin and other medications that you take to control your blood sugar. In addition, alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, increase blood pressure, and affect your heart rate. All of these symptoms combined, can lead to serious health complications.

The only way to guarantee that you won’t be at risk for alcohol and diabetes related health complications is to not consume alcohol. This isn’t so simple if you have a dependency to alcohol. Going to an addiction treatment center with a background in medical issues is highly recommended. Alcohol dependency is more than just the act of drinking. Any type of dependency affects your body, mind, and spirit. At a treatment center with medical knowledge and a holistic approach, all of your needs can be met.
