Why it is Important to Interact with Humans in Sobriety

When people think about addiction, they usually think about the substances that are abused and how a person acts when they are under the influence. One of the aspects of substance abuse that get overlooked is the isolation that an addiction provokes someone into. There are many variables that are caused from isolating that are not necessarily understood by someone who does not have problems with drugs and alcohol.

Avoidance

A person with an addiction does not want anyone to really know how bad it has gotten. In order to protect their addictive behaviors, they will stop hanging out with others to keep their secret at bay.

Fear

One factor that is common with addiction is fear. Living in fear of finances, relationships, or mental health issues can make someone paralyzed in taking care of their responsibilities or obligations.

Guilt

People who drink and use and know that they are not making a good decision to do so, begin to feel guilty of how they are living their life. The guilt they feel makes them stay away from others that may point out how their choices affect them.

Shame

The distress of not being able to stop abusing substances can turn into humiliation. Through shame, a person will distance themselves from others because they are not ready to look at what they need to do to change.

Companionship is a vital need for all humans and is especially gratifying for someone who is in recovery. Trying to remain sober alone is not a good idea for someone who wants to stay sober. Just as companionship is vital to all humans, support is vital for those who are in recovery. Having others who understand and relate to what has happened to them is important. One person supporting another is a coping mechanism for stress and a help to curb the loneliness that has developed over time in their addiction.

When someone starts using drugs and alcohol uncontrollably, their self-esteem suffers and their ability to connect with others becomes inauthentic. Having relationships with others is critically important for humans to survive because loneliness is something that will most likely break them down. In recovery, having human interaction is literally a life saver because once a person gets the support they need they will then turn around and give back what was so freely given to them.
