Life can be tough sometimes. Just because you are in recovery, does not make you exempt from taxes and disappointments. Learning to enjoy your sobriety in the midst of the storms of life is a powerful skill to acquire. Yes, sometimes you do need to give yourself time to breathe. Other times, you need to take action and go out of your way to get self care in.

- Learn when to take time for yourself. Taking time for yourself is not selfish. Sometimes you need it. Think about it. You are busy getting treatment, going to meetings, and working with your sponsor or mentor. Learning how to be okay and stay sober when alone is a great skill to have. Learning how to enjoy your own company is a sign of personal growth.

- Learn when to reach out for the support of others. Recovery doesn’t work if you isolate. You must learn to call supportive people, go out for fellowship, and trust in the support and friendship of others.

- Learn how to prioritize self care is an important step to enjoying sobriety. Perhaps you don’t even know what you like to do. If this is the case, make a list of ideas. Try them all and whatever you like to do, start doing them. Examples of self care are massages, baths, poetry readings, or whatever calms and relaxes you.

- Learn how to treat yourself. Buy the shoes, go on the trip, eat your favorite meal. Recovery is not about punishment. Recovery is simply about learning a new way to live and enjoy your life. Life can be hard enough sometimes, so go on adventures that make you happy.

- Learn how to enjoy the quiet times. There is growth in being content in solitude. Even if alone time feels awkward at first, you can learn to enjoy the quiet. Consider scheduling 2-3 hours a week of alone time. Read a book or decorate your home, but learn to enjoy solitude. Remember to incorporate balance because too much alone time is isolation.
