5 Ways to Naturally Increase the Quality of your Sleep

When you start your road to recovery, your early days of sobriety will be the most challenging. With time, you will begin to feel energized, focused, and committed to your new life. For some people, using substances was a way to have focus and energy. There are natural ways to increase your energy levels, so that you don’t have to resort to stimulants or other mood altering chemicals.

Caffeine is a legitimate source of energy. Caffeine can be found in coffee, teas, and energy drinks. While this may solve your energy problem in the short term, you can become physically dependent on caffeine. Withdrawal symptoms can include irritation, agitation, rage, mood swings, and even the inability to relax.

There are more natural ways to solve your energy problem. Here are 5 ways to naturally increase your energy levels:

  1. Take charge of your diet. You are what you eat. If you consume too many processed, sugary foods, you will feel drained throughout your day. Start replacing foods loaded with carbs for more natural healthy foods. A handful of almonds are a great way to naturally increase your energy. Other foods known to naturally increase energy levels are leafy greens, grains, eggs, water, beans and lentils.
  2. Make your bedroom a place for sleep. With today’s technology advancements, you may find it challenging to turn off your phones, tablets, and televisions. Unfortunately, bright lights negatively impact your sleep and interrupt your sleep cycles. Make your bedroom a place for rest and sleep.
  3. Avoid alcohol and drugs. This goes without saying if you are in recovery, but still true. Alcohol and drugs interrupt your sleep cycle. Alcohol especially will make it seem that you slept, but the quality of sleep is poor and you will feel tired the next day. Avoid alcohol and drugs to increase quality sleep.
  4. Exercise is a great way to regulate your sleep. Exercise affects your body temperature causing it to rise. Higher body temperatures improve sleep quality. Just be sure not to exercise right before bed, which could produce the opposite effect.

Reduce stress and increase meditation. Stress negatively affects your sleep, as well. Meditation can help lower stress levels and increase your chances of restful sleep. Start incorporating meditation into your life to improve the quality of your sleep and increase your energy levels.
