Recovery from alcohol is a huge deal. If you have started recovery or even considering it, you need to take a moment and be proud of yourself. Alcohol is different than other substances because it is socially acceptable and seems to be available everywhere. Once you have been in recovery a little while, sobriety becomes easier. Sobriety is real living. Active alcohol addiction is not.

There are several things to consider when you are recovering from alcohol. An important part of your sobriety journey is your diet. What you put in your body determines the level of healing that your body receives. If you fill your body with processed, sugary, and fatty foods, you will not feel the same as recovering on a diet with fresh, wholesome foods.

Alcohol can actually increase your cravings for unhealthy foods. Greasy and fatty foods trigger the same areas in your brain that alcohol does. This is why sometimes, when someone experiences a hangover they have cravings for unhealthy foods. Eating healthy and wholesome foods can help regenerate your liver and recover quicker.

A diet of fresh greens, grains, fibers, and lean meats is a good start. In addition to healthy foods, getting your daily intake of at least 8 glasses of water is also important to your recovery. You want to limit processed, fatty foods at least during the initial stages of recovery.

You can still enjoy indulging in other foods, but everything in moderation. Consider having a cheat meal once every week. Be careful not to make this a habit. You really want to eat more healthy foods than unhealthy foods.

An example of nutritious foods to eat, especially in the first stages of recovery are as follows:

  • Fresh fruits
  • Fruit and vegetable smoothies
  • Kale, spinach, and dark leafy greens
  • Quinoa
  • Brown rice
  • Yogurt and raw honey
  • Nuts
  • Turkey, chicken, and fish
  • Sprouted grain bread
  • Lean deli meats
  • Fresh and steamed vegetables

Your diet is important to your recovery and mood. What you put in your body will have an effect on your energy, mood, and even cravings, so take extra care with what you eat.
