Alternative and Creative Therapy Types Used in Treatment

Currently, there are more than 14,500 treatment centers in the United States.   There are dozens of treatment approaches and each rehabilitation facility will have its own methodology and implementation.  The majority of  treatment centers offer twelve-step based spiritual programs to help you overcome your addiction.  These programs have been scientifically proven to help addicts and alcoholics get and stay well.  They will not work for everyone, which is why there are many other approaches.

One that is evidentially supported is the use of meditation.  Meditation is the practice of mindfulness, in which a state of complete calmness and serenity are achieved.  Meditation has been proven to reduce the production of a stress hormone called cortisol and increase the immune system.  It helps aid in ridding the body of harsh chemicals from substance abuse.  There are different types of meditation that have shown to have various benefits.  Vipassana meditation helps to train the mind of all negative thinking and behavior, permanently.  Transcendental meditation has shown to target and reverse psychological problems that caused addiction.

Addiction is a disease caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  The biochemical restoration and nutrition approach was developed for this purpose.  Some believe that nutrition deficiency is what causes an imbalance in the brain, making a person more prone to addiction.  Therefore, treatment consists of an individual assessment followed by a nutrition plan with supplements.  Physical activity is also recommended to help neurotransmitters rebalance brain activity.  Exercise and yoga are proven stress relievers and aid individuals in overcoming stressful situations.

One method of treatment for substance abuse that is gaining traction is neurofeedback.  Neurofeedback is performed by placing EEG sensors on a person’s head, which allows the  monitoring of brain waves in real time.  A person who is suffering from substance abuse can then interact and manipulate them.  For instance, if an addict is having a substance craving, they can manually access their brain and change neurotransmitters so the craving disappears.  Neurofeedback has been around for several decades, but it is now starting to be tested and performed on addicts to treat substance abuse.

Nicotinomide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), also known as niacin, is a naturally occurring chemical found in all living cells.  It is a derivative of vitamin B3 and is essential for energy production.  When a person abuses drugs and alcohol, they are extremely niacin deficient.  Some studies have shown that a mega-infusion of this nutrient can decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms caused by substance abuse.  It has even shown to cure addiction to some substances.  Each person’s needs are as different as their DNA makeup.  What works for one person, may not work for another.  The wide range of options for addiction treatment will make it possible for you to overcome your addiction and get your life back.
