New Ways of Thinking You’ll Encounter In Recovery

Recovery alters the way that you think. In fact, the only way to successfully recover is to change your thinking patterns. The transformation process of recovery is a good thing. When you were in your addiction, your thinking patterns were self-destructive. Now that you are sober, everything has changed. Try not to be apprehensive, but recovery will change the way that you think.

When you begin the recovery journey, you start to acknowledge when you are wrong and work to change it. Once you get sober, you realize that you can’t fix your problems with the same thinking you had when you used. You have to be solution focused and dedicated to your recovery.

In recovery, you start to learn that you can’t stay sober alone. You begin to recognize the importance of having sober friends and mentors. Having a sober support system is important for your success. Sober friends make you more accountable for your sobriety. Sober friends have experienced similar thoughts and can give you advice about staying sober, even during tough times.

You will help others without thinking about it. Helping others, especially newcomers in recovery, will become second nature. Addiction has been described as an ailment of self. This doesn’t mean that you are sick. Rather, addiction made you act selfishly. When you were  actively using drugs or alcohol, it became all you thought about. In recovery, this mindset changes. You begin to care about others. You may even start helping people who are struggling the way you have.

You’re able to recognize that you don’t have to act on your thoughts. This is a helpful thought process to have if crave drugs or alcohol, especially in early recovery.  Recovery offers you a way out. You begin to learn that just because you think it doesn’t mean you have to act on the thought. In the beginning stages of recovery, craving drugs or alcohol is normal. However, the more you put using thoughts to the side and choose to live another sober day, the easier the choice becomes.

You will be able to defeat negative thoughts and replace them with positive thinking. As your thinking patterns change, you will start to recognize when you need to capture your thoughts. You start to take responsibility for your thoughts. You also learn to acknowledge negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.

Recovery is a change of mind. You can’t stay the same person you were in addiction and grow. Don’t be afraid of change. Embrace change and become a healthier recovering person.
