Nature has a funny way of taking you out of your element and giving you new experiences. Time spent in nature is a researched method to increase your motivation, stay focused, increase mindfulness, and give you enjoyment out of life. These are all qualities of a solid self-care plan. Recovery meetings are important to your recovery, but so is enjoying your life.

Not everyone likes nature. There really are ways to benefit from nature even if you aren’t a nature lover. You may want to first figure out what you can tolerate and what you despise about nature. Perhaps you don’t like the heat, so this is why you spend most of your time indoors. If so, there are ways to still enjoy nature even if you don’t think you are a nature lover.

1- Arboretums and other lowkey nature activities are a good way to get your fill of nature. Arboretums, gardens, and beaches are part of nature. You don’t have to commit to hiking and mountain climbing to get your fill of nature.

2- Nature activities in cooler weather or in the evening are also a good choice if you prefer to avoid the heat of Florida. There are boats for rent at night or in the off season are a great way to get some fresh air without feeling too much heat.

3- Focus on the purpose and experience, not the negatives. Whatever you decide to do, research has shown that spending some time in nature is really healthy for your brain and your recovery. Try to remember the reason why you are getting out in nature, instead of what you don’t like about it. There are so many things to do, so try to find activities that you enjoy and can commit to.
