Ever been to a meeting or being of service to someone else in recovery and get the feeling that you are in the right place at the right time? These types of random happenings are the exact description of serendipity which is defined as “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way”. These wonderful God shots are what lets you know you are doing exactly what you were meant to be doing in your recovery.

Read a daily reflection that precisely outlines what you are going through.

Once you get to a meeting and read the daily reflection, you wonder how a page out of a book can so accurately lay out what trial you are walking through right then. Even better, the page proceeds to give you your solution.

Attend a speaker meeting and hear your story.

You are blown away that someone else has walked through literally the same situation. Although you did not necessarily think you were terminally unique before, after this stranger’s story you know for sure you are not. Being able to relate to someone who tells your story out of the blue can only be explained as a fortuitous experience.

Reach out to a newcomer who says something so profound.

Talking to a newcomer, you realize that your Higher Power is speaking to you because how else would this person know specifically what you needed to hear? There is no doubt that you were heeding a message that was meant to be instrumental in assisting your recovery program.

Run into someone completely unanticipated that you need to make amends to.

When writing some of your amends letters, there are a few people with whom you have no idea how to get in touch with. You may have Facebook or Instagram stalked them to no end because your sponsor told you to do your best to find them to no avail. Randomly you run into them knowing that you promised to go to any lengths to stay sober and now need to make this amends to them because this will give you the closure that you have been searching for.

Read out of your recovery literature and finally understand of what the passage means.

You may have read the same page out of your book hundreds of time, but all of the sudden you have the revelation as to what that excerpt from the book actually means. A clear comprehension of what the page indicates to your recovery turns on a light bulb that expands your knowledge of how to stay sober for the long run.

The thing to remember is there are no coincidences with serendipity. These perceived “accidents” are not odd, it’s just God showing off in a way that She or He can only do.
