Staying in the moment is a beneficial tool of recovery. Staying in the moment is part of mindfulness. Mindfulness is a well researched intervention for sobriety. One of the problems with addiction is that substance use is about instant gratification. Substance use is also a way to escape and numb yourself. Staying in the moment is a simple way to stay focused and decrease anxiety.

Staying in the moment doesn’t need to be complex. Here are 10 simple ways to stay in the moment:

  1. Take a walk along the beach. Be mindful of the feeling of the sand and water between your toes. Breath in the fresh ocean air. This is mindfulness in its simplest form.
  2. Eat mindfully. You don’t have to eat anything fancy. You can eat an apple mindfully. Pay attention to the crunchy, sweetness of the apple. Again, this is how you stay in the moment.
  3. Listen to alpha-theta tones. You can do a youtube search for alpha-theta tone music. Close your eyes, get in a quiet zone, and focus only on the tones and sounds that you hear. Pay close attention to thinking only about the present moment and the sounds that you hear.
  4. Do mindfulness based yoga. There are plenty of places in the area that can teach you the art of mindful yoga. Yoga Bird Studio and Florida Community of Mindfulness are good places to check first.
  5. Treat yourself to a massage. The trick is to make a conscious effort to clear your thoughts. Don’t think about anything except the physical sensations of the massage. Visualize the stress and worry melting off of you.
  6. Practice meditation at home. You can play soft music and even search online for meditation music. Sit in a quiet area, turn your phone off, and simply be. This is the first step towards staying in the moment.
  7. Color! There are meditation based coloring books. Research has found that coloring can be just as effective as traditional meditation. You can find meditation coloring books at most major retailers.

Practicing mindfulness and staying in the moment doesn’t need to be complicated. Try these tips and enjoy a more mindful existence.
