Recovery can seem like an overwhelming goal. How can you really commit to staying sober forever? A positive fact about recovery is that you only have to take it one day at a time. In fact, thinking about sobriety for the next 10 or 20 years is not recommended because you don’t have that much control over the future. Yes, you can make plans and work towards achieving them, but in order to really grasp recovery you have to take it one day at a time. A principle of recovery is realizing that you only have today.

In order to truly recovery, you have to believe in yourself. Granted, staying sober one day at a time is a huge task, but recovery is also rewarding. Self-defeating thoughts can be an enemy to the progress you have made. Success really begins with your attitude and your thoughts. If you say to yourself, “I can’t stay sober”, then you may not be able to stay sober. On the other hand, if you tell yourself that you can recover, you will do what is necessary to accomplish this goal.

Recovery is about changing your life, your mindset, your thoughts, and your goals. Recovery is about taking responsibility and working to make changes. Recovery is not easy, but it is incredibly worth it. Recovery is worth it because you are worth a new start.

As you move ahead in sobriety, you will notice that you have new friends and new opportunities. Stories of recovering people who run businesses, heal family relationships, and live up to their potential are not out of the ordinary. Think about it, when you stop using drugs and alcohol your mind begins to change. If your mind changes, you will become a new person.

When you ask yourself if you can really recovery, change your line of questions. Begin asking yourself if you can afford to stay actively addicted to alcohol and drugs. Begin to ask yourself what life could look life as opposed to what it looks like right now. Do some self-reflection and challenge yourself.
