When you start the recovery journey, chances are you don’t feel that great about yourself. In order to move forward in life and recovery, you have to change the way you perceive yourself. Changing your views of self and increasing self-esteem takes time and practice. In the end, you will be grateful for the time you took to learn how to love yourself.

Changing the way you view yourself is not easy, at first. When you were in active addiction, you felt guilt and shame. Active addiction is not real living, it is surviving. Recovery is about really living and experiencing the good and bad in life, sober.

Changing your view of self is learning to truly love yourself. When you were in active addiction, you didn’t really love yourself. How could you? Addiction bring shame, isolation, and despair. Recovery offers love, wholeness, and contentment. When you first start your recovery journey, you are learning a new way to live. Consider incorporating self affirmations into your life. You may want to stand in front of the mirror and say things like:

  • I am worth love
  • I love myself
  • I am strong
  • I am resilient
  • I can do this recovery thing
  • I can treat myself with respect and patience

Even if you don’t believe yourself at first, if you continue telling yourself positive things, you will start to operate in love. You will begin to treat yourself with kindness and patience. Changing your view of self takes time, but you will find that it gets easier. Like everything in life, practice makes perfect.

When you master being able to love yourself and view yourself with worth, you will not want to return to active addiction. Despair and hope cannot live in the same place. They are opposites. The more you practice loving yourself, you will find that it becomes natural.

You are worth recovery. You deserve to see yourself with value. You are not just some “addict.” You have hopes, dreams, desires, and passions. Let recovery show you who you really are.
