Getting Enough Sleep is as Important as Going to Meetings

Sleep is just as important for your well being and recovery as going to meetings. Sleep allows you to rest and refresh yourself. Unfortunately, the early recovery process involves withdrawal. Even after the initial withdrawal is over, you may find that it takes a while for you to have quality sleep. This happens because of post acute withdrawals syndrome or PAWS.

PAWS are symptoms that occur weeks and months after the initial detox process. One of the symptoms of PAWS includes sleep difficulties. Essentially, during PAWS, your body is adjusting to life without drugs and alcohol.

Your body re-regulates itself during PAWS and you may notice that your sleep is affected. Recovery is still worth it. You won’t feel the symptoms of PAWS 24 hours a day. Even in early recovery, you’ll have plenty of good days, but it’s important to prepare.

One of the ways that you can prepare for your body regulating and healing itself is by getting enough rest. Sleep is very important to the recovery process. In fact, your body’s tissues repair themselves during sleep.

You begin to feel the effects of sleep deprivation within one day of inadequate sleep. You may feel irritable, more hungry, and even have reduced impulse control. Impulse control plays a big role in staying sober. You actually have a better chance of fighting off cravings to use if you’ve had enough rest.

There are a several ways to encourage quality sleep and better rest. Here are some tips to consider :

  • Set a bedtime and try to keep it
  • Don’t sleep with lights out
  • Meditate before bed
  • Drink non caffeinated tea and honey
  • Don’t fall asleep while watching television or listening to loud noises
  • Incorporate a nightly ritual for sleep
  • Have comfortable bedding
  • Exercise encourages proper rest
  • Avoid naps if you have trouble sleeping
  • Don’t eat fatty, sugary foods before bed
  • Consider taking melatonin, a natural sleep aid

Quality sleep is just as important for your recovery as going to meetings and talking to your sponsor. Sleep is good for regenerating your body and even escaping for a little while. Sleep is cathartic and healing.
