Honesty is a critical part of your recovery. Honesty emcompasses honesty with others, as well as self. In order to stay sober, you need to be able to be honest with yourself about your thoughts, cravings, and desires.

Just because you have a negative thought, does not mean that you have to act on it. However, you do need to be honest and try to understand where the thought came from.

Taking a personal inventory is a vital part of the 12 step program. Taking an inventory involves sitting with your sponsor or mentor, and talking about your motives, your struggles, and your goals. This is where honesty begins.

Learning to be honest with others is equally as important. Honesty means being able to set boundaries with other people. Honesty also means acknowledging when someone is a positive or negative influence. Honesty with others will help keep you sober.

Living an honest, sober life isn’t always easy, but recovery is always worth it. You are worth it. When you are living in active addiction, life isn’t about honesty. Life is about chasing drugs and alcohol. Life in addiction is an illusion of real living. Once you get sober, you’re mind and body begin to reset. You change.

Part of change means to break old habits and incorporate new ones. This type of change takes practice. You can start the habit of honesty by practicing in meetings, with your sponsor, or in therapy.

Being honest means that you may need to confront the past and deal with uncomfortable memories. When you’re in the early stages of recovery, it’s never recommended to deal with past pains alone. Treatment can help you deal with the past in a safe environment.

Going to treatment can make the process of healing easier. Treatment will also help you learn how to incorporate honesty into your recovery through counseling and group support. Treatment will give you the tools you need to succeed, one day at a time.
