How to Remain Productive While Working From Home

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may have had to begin working permanently from home instead of in an office environment. For some, this transition may have been easier than for others. 

Without having your boss hovering or looking over your shoulder to check your progress, it can be tempting to sleep in and slack off throughout the day, making motivation hard to come by. This cycle can affect your overall work performance and even lead to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. If you are currently transitioning to a remote work environment, you must find a way to stay productive while also protecting your mental health at the same time. 

Sticking to a Schedule 

In many professional working environments, your schedule will already be set for you. This may include what time you start your workday, when your breaks are, and when you are done for the day. When you work from home, this timeframe is often more flexible and more dependent upon your own decisions. 

If you are transitioning to a remote work environment, it is crucial that you not only create your own daily schedule but make a conscious effort to stick to it. This includes waking up at the same time each day, taking pre-planned breaks, and deciding what time you will be stepping away or signing off from work for the day. This can help ensure that you maintain a balance between your work and home life. 

Creating Your Own Workspace 

While working from home, it can be tempting to stay as comfortable as possible and spend your day working from your bed or couch. Because these areas are associated with rest and relaxation, it is best if you can choose a different space in your home for work. 

Not everyone has a spare room in their house to designate as their office, and that is okay. If this is your situation, consider setting up an office in your kitchen or dining room. The goal for this space is to have as few distractions as possible. 

You will also want to make sure that this area is ready to go with anything you may need, such as your computer, printer, headphones, or notepads before you start your workday. This will prevent you from having to go from room to room throughout the day to gather materials. 

Setting Times for Digital Distractions

Social media can be an excellent tool for staying connected with others, especially when working from home. It can also quickly become a distraction that takes away from your productivity. It is easy to open social media with the intention of just quickly checking in, only to find yourself losing track of time and sacrificing important time that could have been spent being productive. If this is something that you often experience, it may be helpful to designate pre-planned time slots throughout the day to check social media. 

Take Breaks Throughout the Day 

Taking breaks throughout the day is vital as it allows time for your body and mind to refuel. Make sure that you are giving yourself adequate time to eat a meal, use the restroom, or stretch your legs. If possible, try to get outside and take a quick walk. This can help boost your energy levels and allow you to recharge so you can take on the rest of your day. If you often get carried away with work and forget to take breaks, consider setting alarms on your phone. 

Ensure That You Are Keeping in Touch With Loved Ones

One of the dangers of working from home is that it can quickly become isolating, especially if you live alone. This is why it is so critical to put in the extra effort to regularly check in with family and friends throughout the day. You may consider scheduling a weekly Zoom session with your close friends or setting a designated time each evening to spend with your partner without any outside distractions. 

Take Note of Your Mental Health 

Working from home has its benefits, but it can be stressful, especially during the adjustment period. That is why it is imperative to keep track of your mental health, whether it be through journaling, practicing meditation, speaking with a trusted friend, or even investing in therapy. Always remember to give yourself enough time to recharge each day by eating nutritious meals, getting plenty of sleep, and practicing self-care. These relatively easy activities will help you feel and be your best.
