Why is it Important to Practice Recovery Principles?

Part of Step 12 is stated as “practicing these principles in all our affairs”. As you read that excerpt, you may gasp thinking this is too tall of an order for me to achieve and you are probably right. To take a literal understanding of this portion of Step 12 would be a disservice. No one expects you to be perfect, but the point is to try. If you are trying to practice the principles in all your affairs, then you are in a step in the right direction.

Your life will improve.

Being bogged down by resentment and selfishness only keeps you from feeling insecure and unsure in your life’s situation. Getting rid of those negative aspects that keep you in despair will be a huge weight lifted off your shoulders into better actions and emotions. The principles allow you to act and emote in ways which increase self-esteem and self-confidence.

The life of others around you will improve.

We are who we surround ourselves with and instead of following others who display bad behaviors, you have an opportunity to be a leader and do what is right for you. You will start to be an example of considerate and helpful behaviors that may astonish those around you who have seen you suffer from your addiction. By being the best version of yourself, you will affect those around you with positivity.

Your spirituality will improve.

Looking inward and practicing the principles in all your affairs simply means that you will act with more intent. Being aware of recovery principles as a way of life, you will begin to interact with others in a less reactive way and become more authentic in being who you are truly meant to be. All in all, improving your spirituality with recovery principles means that you have a better chance of being less harmful to yourself and others.

If “not drinking” was the cure for the cessation of alcohol and drugs, then there would be no need for 12-Step programs. There is more to the equation than not drinking and practicing the principles in all your affairs can give the thrust that you need to become the person that your Higher Power wants you to be. Responsibility, integrity, inner strength, self-respect, and resilience are the results of practicing the principle in all your affairs through implementing the twelfth step into your daily life.

The Kimberly Center offers a variety of recovery programs to cover your every need during our extensive treatment for drugs and alcohol. We offer a unique recovery experience while providing a safe place to practice the principles of recovery that you will need in the real world.
