3 Ways to Make it Through your First Sober Week

You’ve done it. You have gotten through your first hour of sobriety, and now it’s time to make it through your first week. Congratulations on making this life changing decision. Be prepared. Your first sober week isn’t easy, but it is so worth it. In fact, you are worth it.

1- Patience.

The best thing for you to do is be patient with yourself. Your mind may bombard you with a lot of questions. Will you make it? Is recovery even worth it? The answer to both these questions is a resounding yes!

Your first week or two of sobriety will involve going through physical withdrawal. Your best chance for success means that you may need to go to a treatment center for detox. The physical withdrawals are uncomfortable, but they are temporary.

2- Next, try not to tackle all your problems at once.

You should try to be as present in the moment as possible. Stressing about the past or the future is anxiety provoking. Do your best to stay focused on the here and now. You are in your first week of sobriety, so don’t take on more than you can handle. During your first week, think about making it through detox and getting into treatment.

Taking recovery one day at a time is actually an important principle of the 12-step program. During your first week of recovery, try to take each day as it comes. Recovery is a daily reprieve from active addiction. The only way to have years of sobriety, is to start with one day.

3- Find a support system ASAP.

A sober support system is imperative for your success. If you decide to go to a treatment center for detox, consider staying for treatment. Treatment will equip you with the tools needed for successful recovery. Treatment will point you in the direction of finding sober support. A great place to find new friends and support is at 12-step meetings. Your sober support system will be a big part of your new life in recovery.
