How Overshooting the Mark Can Affect Your Sobriety

There are people who seem to have it all and do everything perfectly. The truth is that assumption is really a dishonest perception which is where much of the anxiety in the United States manifests from. No one is perfect and what you see on the forefront may be an illusion that covers up the defects that they really have. Instead of realizing that everyone flounders from time to time, you may compare yourself to their best efforts instead of being realistic about their downfalls.

This also happens a lot in the recovery world. People who are newly sober may think that their program should be going exactly the same way that another person’s program is going which does nothing but cause discouragement. Trying to more than you are capable of doing, or overshooting the mark, really only keeps you from doing what you are supposed to be doing – to work your program to the best of your ability.

Stop comparing yourself to others

There is nothing wrong with having a mentor or a sponsor that you are trying to follow, but just know that your experience will never be exactly like theirs. Rather than comparing yourself to them or even putting them on a pedestal, know that they are just like you in the sense that they are just another person trying to stay sober and live their best life.

Stay in the moment

Being who you are meant to be in this very moment is the best thing you can do for yourself. By staying focused on what you are supposed to be doing, you can stop focusing on what others are doing and stop trying to measure up to something that is not part of your story. To work through your past today will give you the opportunity to have a better future.

Be the person you were intended to be

You are a beautiful soul no matter the things you may have done under the influence. The world is full of people who make mistakes and the difference you can provide is looking at how you will approach life going forward. By tweaking the direction of your moral compass, you can become an even better version of yourself while being a great example to others in the process.

Overshooting the mark often does not do anything positive for your sobriety and can overwhelm your recovery. Take one day at a time so that you can learn to take one task at a time for better results.
