Addiction is a lonely endeavor. Addiction is a war within yourself that isolates and destroys your self worth. Recovery is quite the opposite. Recovery gives a newfound sense of purpose. Recovery also provides you with an army of support for days that are a little tougher. Recovery also heals relationships and gives you a chance to build new, sober friendships.

An important point to remember is that you cannot recover alone. You need the support of fellow recovering friends and mentors to help you along your way. There are a few different types of relationships that are beneficial to your recovery. You should consider incorporating these relationships into your sobriety.

Sober friends offer a wonderful support system. You can meet sober people at 12 step meetings and other recovery oriented meetings. A good rule of thumb is to have a good mix of supportive people that have varying amounts of clean time. For example, it’s okay to have some friends in early recovery. However, you really want to have a good amount of sober friends that have at least one year and more of sobriety.

Finding a sponsor or mentor is an important part of the recovery process. A mentor/sponsor relationship is similar to a guide for your recovery. A sponsor/mentor will have years of sobriety and will be able to support you as work through the first steps of recovery. This relationship is unique and close. You should feel safe with your sponsor, but also challenged and held accountable for your thoughts and actions.

The best part about the recovery journey is that you don’t have to walk the journey alone. In fact, isolation can prove disastrous to your sobriety. Recovery can be fun and filled with memorable times. This is why it’s so important to have a strong support system.

There may be times when you want to be alone, and this is okay. Just be careful not to isolate too much. Make a special effort to keep in touch with your sober support system almost daily. Go out of your way to spend time with your sober relationships.
