The only way to successfully manage a recovery program is to take things one day at a time. This seems pretty cut and dry, but you may find that some days are harder than others. You do need to plan ahead for some things like work, family, and bills. If this is the case, how can you really handle your recovery one day at a time?

The 12-step programs encourage members to take recovery one day at a time. Some days, you may even have to handle your recovery one minute or one second at a time. Once you get into the habit of taking your recovery one day at a time, you will find that it gets easier and easier to do.

Here are tips on taking recovery and life one day at a time:

1- Recognize that you can’t fix, manage, and control every little thing. Some things you have to let go. If you can’t change a situation, take a breathe, release your stress over things you can’t control, and move forward.

2- Consider putting positive reminders around your home to remind you to take things one day at a time. Self affirmations can be a powerful tool to help you stay focused. Many people use post it notes ad stick them on their bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or any other place in your home that you frequent. Self affirmations can be as simple as writing reminders to stay sober just for today.

3- Go to meetings, call your sponsor/mentor, go to a support group, or attend therapy. You may not attend a recovery oriented support group everyday. Even so, you should still be doing whatever is necessary to prioritize your recovery on a daily basis, even if that means to simply call a sober friend or supportive loved one. Isolation is dangerous to your recovery, so be extra careful not to withdraw.

4- Enjoy your life. Recovery isn’t based on rules and regulations. Eat the chocolate cake. Take that vacation. Life can be filled with enjoyment and sober pleasures.
