Every day that you remain sober is a good day but staying sober on Thanksgiving is a blessing. Thanksgiving Day represents gratefulness which is the foundation of a recovery program. Getting out of the throes of addiction into a life free of drugs and alcohol will be the best thing you ever did for yourself. You may be asking yourself how is it even possible to have a good day without drugs and alcohol? You just need to try it out and see for yourself what happens when you stay sober on Thanksgiving.

You will have manners

Drugs and alcohol probably have made you appear make sloppy in how you hold yourself at the Thanksgiving dinner table in the past. This year being sober you will be more aware of your posture, chewing with your mouth closed, keeping your napkin on your lap, and what you talk about. Under the influence, these types of manners go right out the door and if you stay sober you will be politer.

You will enjoy the food much more

When you are using or drinking, your taste buds are at a disadvantage. Although you may get the munchies when you are high or drunk, you cannot really taste the food as well unless you are sober. Munchies only make you want to eat more and more which is what Thanksgiving is all about, but you can have a better experience overall by not drinking or using and focus on one of the things Thanksgiving is known for – the food.

You will enjoy the company much more

When you are loaded or drunk, all you care about is continuing to get loaded and drunk. Staying sober on Thanksgiving means that you will be totally present and have a better chance at getting along with others by working your program. No has to walk around on eggshells and you no longer have to lie as to why you keep going to the bathroom.

You will be grateful

Spending your first Thanksgiving sober can give you the confidence that you can do this on other holidays as well. Any day that you stay sober should be a day that you feel thankful, but Thanksgiving will take that thankfulness to a whole other level.

This year eat, thank, and be merry. Happy Thanksgiving!
