One of the ways to ensure long-term sobriety is to enlarge your spiritual life. For some this will be a foreign concept and for others there will be a resistance because the idea of a Higher Power might make you cringe. The first thing you need to know is that being spiritual does not mean that you have to be religious. Being spiritual just means that your highest priority is to learn how to love yourself and others.

Unmaterialistic

Any happiness you receive from material items is mostly fleeting because we always want more. Being spiritual means that you believe there is more in the world than just the material objects you see. Spirituality is more than meets the eye and is something that comes from within. Being sober can lift the blinders you have established on your soul. You can may start by seeing the beauty in the world through nature, through feeling loved, and truly enjoying anything that gives you some peace.

Inside job

Intentionally using therapy and your recovery program will no doubt help you to clean your insides out to make room for unintentional spiritual growth. Unless you know what you will be getting spiritually, you may not be too keen on working your issues out. Any resentment, abuse, trauma, or anything that causes you torment will keep you from feeling the sunlight of the spirit. Taking action to get rid of the excess baggage that you have continued to carry around with you will help you to gain more self-knowledge about yourself and give more notice to your spiritual side.

Virtuous

Using the recovery principles to get you through the ups and downs of life can help you to make ethical decisions and conduct yourself in a manner that is conducive of how a kind and loving person should act. Being principled may not be your normal way of life, but if you practice being the person you have always wanted to be you can achieve the virtues you set out to attain by following what your Higher Power wants for you.

Gratitude

As soon as you understand the aspect of being grateful, you will change. Your attitude, your guiding force, and your values will help you to recognize the importance of implementing recovery measures into your daily life. Appreciation for all things big or small can change your outlook and get you connected to a power greater than yourself.

Enlarging your spiritual life may take some time to grasp although you will only need to take it one day at a time to keep from getting too overwhelmed. Every little bit of your spirituality is important to build on so make your time with your Higher Power count.
