Now that you have gotten sober, you may feel so good with all the effort you are putting into your recovery that you may decide to take on other activities that give you more of those good feelings. Exercise may be one of those things that you choose to implement into your recovery especially because you know you can get a natural high from endorphins. Whatever the reason is that you have chosen to start exercising, you will no doubt gain some physical, mental, and spiritual benefits to make your recovery that much better.

You will feel better all the way around.

When you start exercising, you may get sore from moving your body in a new way but if you continue with your training, you are taking action to get physically stronger, build your confidence, and increase your energy level. Exercise gets the blood and oxygen flowing more freely to help you become more motivated to do more things in your life which continue to improve your cardiovascular health and mental health.

You will find yourself with more happiness.

Drugs and alcohol make up the facade that you are happy because of the dopamine and endorphins that are released in the brain during substance abuse. With exercise, the brain also releases natural endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin that are healthy for a person’s well-being. These neurotransmitters play an integral part in regulating mood, sleep, and diet that can often be difficult to manage after the cessation of drugs or alcohol.

You can better focus on your recovery goals.

Exercise can be instrumental in getting you to center yourself in the areas of your life that you may have been missing out on due to your substance abuse. You will probably find yourself also eating healthier from working out which can help you with your overall concentration. Being able to better focus on your recovery can give you a better chance to understand your therapy much clearer and work your steps more thoroughly which can get you to connect to your Higher Power much easier.

Whether you run, lift weights, trampoline jump, attend a Zumba class, or wish to become a Yogi, you can find the exercise that will be most effective for you and your recovery. In your addiction, you were trying to continue to feel good from the effects from drugs and alcohol, and in your recovery, you can do the same by devoting some weekly times to use exercise to enhance your sobriety.
