The outdoor concert season is starting and concerts such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and South by Southwest are highly attended with huge crowds. Although the music and camaraderie are gratifying, concerts are one of the main events that are typically identified with getting drunk and loaded. The music you enjoy can be felt within your heart and soul and adding the psychoactive effects that alcohol and drugs provide, can increase the prominence of the melody to yet another level.

Now that you are sober, however, you may fear attending concerts that you love because you understand that you may be putting your sobriety in jeopardy with one wrong move. Your concerns should not be taken lightly because they are completely warranted. Putting yourself in a precarious situation such as attending a concert should be well thought out with a plan of action beforehand to keep your sobriety intact.

Know your limits.

If you think that smelling smoke or seeing others drink or use may cause you triggers and cravings, you may need to rethink going at all. You may have a serious case of FOMO if you cannot go, but you could have an even more serious case of relapse on your hands. Talk to your sponsor or your therapist before you buy your tickets and see where you are in your recovery. Worst case scenario, you can watch video on social media and go next year when you are stronger in your recovery.

Plan your exit.

When you become uncomfortable with an obsession with drugs and alcohol, you should be willing to excuse yourself from the concert at all costs. Being at a concert can bring about thoughts of using and drinking because that is what you are experiencing within others at that moment. Have your Uber or Lyft app available at your fingertips or ride with another sober friend to leave when you feel at risk to pick up a drink or a drug.

Find a sober group.

Look for groups on social media that are planning to meet for a meeting during the concert. Coachella has a Soberchella group that meets at a specific time and location in between concerts to regroup while the alcohol and drug induced event is taking place. Being able to relate to others in recovery is important at any time and you may find that a concert is a pretty appropriate place for a meeting.

Putting your sobriety first may be hard to fathom over seeing your favorite artist or group perform live. Make decisions wisely when it comes to concert going so that you can continue to enjoy the music one day at a time.
