12-step meetings are one of the many different tools for recovery. 12-step meetings use sponsorship to help you take responsibility and acknowledge that you are powerless over alcohol or drugs. 12-step meetings give you more for your recovery than you realize.

You can’t recover alone. Recovery, especially the 12-steps, relies on the “group” to achieve recovery. Addiction was lonely and now you are a new person. Don’t try accomplish new goals by being the same person, because it won’t work.

AA gives you community. This is huge. Before you came to the rooms of AA, you may have had associates, but were those people really friends? AA gives you a new sense of belonging with a group of people who have been right where you are. AA is about one alcoholic helping another.

AA gives you lifelong friends. The people you meet in AA share similar goals and interests. Each person in AA is working their recovery program, whether they have one day or twenty years of sobriety. AA members will pick up the phone at 2am if you are going through difficult times. Likewise, you become a person that will pick up a ringing phone in the middle of the night to talk with a struggling friend.

AA gives you a new life with new fun and new responsibilities.  The program of AA is not always non stop meetings. AA is well known for Holiday social gatherings, dances, eating out at nice restaurants, going to sporting events. AA members like to have fun and they are good at it.

Getting involved in the 12-step program is more than just going to meetings. Meetings are great, but you can’t attend meetings 24/7. At some point, you need to put into practice what you learn in the rooms of AA. You will met new friends and get involved with sober activities. In all reality, AA teaches you how to live you life sober. AA also helps you learn how to enjoy living sober.
