5 Ways to Tell if You Have a Connection With your Therapist

Therapy is a wonderful tool to cope with past pains and traumas, as well as addiction. The therapeutic relationship is unique and intimate one. You process emotional wounds and move towards healing and growth. This is not an overnight process, but the process is well worth it.

In order for therapy to be effective, you as the client, need to be invested. In addition, you need to have a strong alliance and connection with your therapist. Here are five ways to tell if you have a connection with your therapist.

1- You don’t feel judged. Therapy is supposed to be a judgement free zone. You should feel safe to share your innermost thoughts with someone who provides insight and empathy, not judgement.

2- You feel a genuine closeness. The therapeutic relationship is an intimate professional relationship. Your therapist may or may not choose to share personal aspects of their life. Ultimately, this relationship is about you and your healing. The healing process is painful sometimes. Being able to heal with someone that you feel connected with is invaluable and crucial to your growth.

3- You feel free to talk about anything. Your therapist is bound by confidentiality to keep your discussions private. There are only a few exception to this obligation. If you disclose suicidal or homicidal thoughts or plans, there is suspected child or elder abuse, or a court warrant, your therapist will need to disclose this information. Your therapist should work with you closely if any of these topics come up. Outside of those parameters, there is nothing off the table. Your therapist can handle whatever you need to talk about.

4- You are challenged. The therapeutic process is about challenging you to grow. While you need to be connected and comfortable, you should also feel challenged. Getting to the root of your concerns is not always a walk in the park. If you feel challenged, you are in a good place.

5- You genuinely like going to therapy. Even though therapy can be challenging, your therapist should be helping you through tough times and teaching you coping tools. You should feel safe. If you are getting something out of the process and you enjoy the results you see, chances are you have a positive connection with your therapist.
