What to Consider Before Entering a Treatment Program

If you or someone you know is suffering from a substance use disorder, you may be wondering what type of help is needed for their treatment and recovery. There are many different types of treatment options available, including different modalities and facilities. Which facility you should choose for treatment depends on their treatment and recovery programs and whether they vary based on the addiction and the characteristics of the person with the addiction.

It is important that you carefully consider your options when choosing a treatment facility. Finding the right fit may take some time. However, before you enter into a treatment program, there are three things you should consider.

#1. Do You Need Immediate Help?

If you are actively experiencing the effects of your addiction and need immediate help, please look for local options that can provide the assistance you need. The earlier you find help for an addiction, the greater chance there is that you will have a positive outcome with your sobriety.

#2. What Outcome Do You Desire?

If you are seeking a treatment center for yourself, make sure you understand your “why” for seeking treatment. Why do you want to get better? Why are you seeking treatment? Your “why” must be meaningful to you. You cannot become sober and manage your sobriety if you are seeking treatment to satisfy someone else.

#3. What Are Your Goals?

Have goals in mind of what you want to accomplish while in treatment. Share those goals with your potential treatment center to make sure that they align with the treatment plans the center offers.

What to Look For in a Treatment Program

The facility and treatment program you choose to help you become sober will factor significantly into your recovery success. All treatment centers are not the same. If you are able to, take the time to research different centers to find ones that may best fit your needs.

If you are actively experiencing the effects of addiction and you’re not in the best frame of mind to research your options, you can also ask a medical professional or someone you know to help you find the treatment you need.

5 Questions to Ask Potential Treatment Centers

The following questions can help you choose the right treatment center for you or your loved one before they begin their journey into recovery:

#1. Is Detox Available?

Detoxing is the first step that you must complete before entering most treatment programs (or right when you enter). Medically supervised detox should be available to make sure that the patient’s health and well-being are being monitored during the detox phase.

#2. Do They Treat the Person, the Addiction, or Both?

There is not a one-size-fits-all program for recovery. Treatment programs will vary for each individual, depending on their type of addiction, medical history, and the characteristics of the client themselves. Make sure that your treatment center can customize a plan to your individual needs. Effective treatment programs will treat the entire person and not just focus on the substance abuse.

#3. Is There Long-Term Support?

Managing your sobriety is a life-long commitment. Having access to continued care and support resources will be an important part of your recovery journey. As you consider which treatment center is right for your needs, make sure that continuing care programs are offered as part of their services.

#4. Will Your Insurance Cover the Program?

Treatment programs can be expensive, and it is important to know how medical costs will be covered prior to checking into a facility. Be sure to contact your insurance provider to determine if you have coverage for drug and alcohol treatment. You will also want to make sure that the treatment center you chose will work with your insurance provider to help manage costs and cover the majority of the expenses.

#5. Are They Licensed?

Make sure that any treatment center you choose to attend is licensed by the state where they are located. Having a license means that the facility meets the requirements for providing services to its clients. At a minimum, any treatment center under consideration should have this documentation. Each state will have its own requirements for licensing, and you can contact your local Department of Health and Human Services to find out more.
