When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Go to Meetings

Life is hard. Sure, there are many joyous moments that make recovery worth the effort. However, there are some moments, such as the death of a loved one or financial consequences, that are just plain difficult. Even though you may be tempted to withdraw or isolate, the best action that you can take is to keep working your program.

Yesterday’s meeting won’t help you today. Once you get substantial clean time under your belt, you may not want or need to attend meetings 7 days a week. However, recovery becomes part of life, so you can’t neglect meetings. There are people who have been sober 10 or 20 years that still go to meetings 4-5 times a week. In order to keep on a steady path, you have to go to meetings.

You need the support of others even though you may not feel like it. Chances are that someone in the meetings have been through similar experiences. While they don’t understand exactly how you feel, the support of another person is priceless.

Being alone can be cathartic, but not always. There is a difference between spending quality time alone and isolation. When life hands you lemons, it may feel tempting to just stay at home and cuddle up on the couch. These moments of alone time are okay. However, too much alone time leads to isolation.

There is more to meetings than reading the Big Book. Meetings and the 12 step program, in general, gives you a new sense of community and friendship. You will meet so many wonderful people in the 12 step rooms. These sober allies have the potential to become close friends. When you you experiencing difficult moments in life, you need the support of others. Go to meetings and be around your support system, even when life has you down.

Most importantly, give yourself a break. If you have a negative attitude, don’t beat yourself up. Life can be difficult. Be patient and understanding with yourself. Make sure you stay connected to others, go to meetings, and practice patience with self. These three tips are how you stay sober when you go through tough times.
