One of the most difficult things to do is to wander into a 12-Step meeting for the first time. Everyone is new at one time. Do you remember walking through the doors of your first meeting? You were probably nervous because you were unsure what to expect. As you continue to go to meeting it tends to get easier as time goes on and seeing the same people time after time gets you more connected to the group.

New people will continue to straggle in and the best thing you can do for them is to remember what it was like to be the new kid. Most newcomers do not come into a 12-Step meeting because they really want to. Usually a judge, a spouse, or an employer are giving them an opportunity to redeem themselves by showing the willingness to attend meetings. Most likely a newcomer will be scared to death to be in this situation which is where you can really be of service to them.

Genuinely greet them

Although they are probably not ready to hug you just yet, you can shake their hand, tell them your name, and give them your phone number for support. Since they are probably already anxious, try to be as comforting and as welcoming as you can. Offer to show them around and give them guidance on what comes next. Be the hand that reaches back because they obviously need something to grab onto.

Add a personal touch

Now that you have introduced yourself, give them the rundown on the meetings in the area and any upcoming events. Invite them to any workshops or parties that are coming up so you can help them get into the middle of the herd.

Let the program speak for itself

If you have been sober for any period of time, you may want to shout from the rooftops about how you did it. Sharing your experience, strength, and hope is a great thing, but if are promoting the program without merit, you may be doing more harm than good. Try to keep from overwhelming the newcomer with your excitement and just walk the walk.

Newcomers are important assets in the room for a several reasons. They can remind you what it is like to be out there getting beat up by substance abuse. A newcomer also gives you another way to be of service which is the foundation of the program to help keep you sober.

The Kimberly Center is an evidence-based treatment program that assists individuals who are suffering from substance abuse and related issues. Our goal is to restore a healthier, happier, and more productive life in recovery.
