Natural Energy Supplements Aren’t Always a Quick Fix

If you are a busy person, chances are you have used some type of energy supplement. Even if you haven’t, you may know someone who uses “natural” energy supplements as a way to stay alert.

Natural energy supplements can be misleading because they are not necessarily natural. The truth is that some of these energy supplements can cause serious health problems. In some cases, misuse of energy supplements or taking supplements with certain health conditions can cause death.

There are many different types of energy supplements. Coffee drinks with added energy are a common staple for many busy Americans. There are energy drinks known as Red Bull and 5 Hour Energy that have several ingredients that can be harmful when taken in excess or if taken with certain medical conditions. There are also energy supplement pills that can be taken for the same effects.

The ingredient in most of these supplements are:

  • Caffeine
  • Taurine
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Ginseng
  • Sugar

Energy supplements and drinks carry health risks due to the high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other additives. There have been cases where people have died due to the risks associated with energy supplements. Some of these people had pre-existing conditions, were young, and some have overdosed on these drinks and supplements.

Health risks include:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Headaches
  • Addiction
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Insomnia
  • Jitters
  • High blood pressure
  • Overdose
  • Death
  • Vomiting and nausea
