Part of successful recovery is being honest with yourself. Self awareness can actually save your life. When you were in active addiction, you may not have been fully self aware. Your life consisted of how to get more drugs and alcohol. While you were in active addiction, you may not have even known who you really were.

Self awareness keeps you sober. When you are self aware, you are able to notice when you are falling off track. Self awareness allows you to notice when things just aren’t right in your life. Perhaps you are isolating, perhaps you are decreasing the meetings or support groups you attend. Self awareness allows you to stop negative behavior and get back on track, without relapsing.

Be mindful of old behavior. If you catch yourself slipping back into old thoughts and patterns, observe and replace these actions with positive ones. If you begin to notice that meetings have lost their priority, stop immediately to reflect. Make the extra effort to go back to meetings, call your sponsor, and spend time with sober people who will keep you accountable.

Be conscientious of your attitude. Do you have an attitude of gratitude or are you stuck in negative thinking? Being able to answer this question honestly and openly is the key to self awareness. If you aren’t honest with yourself, you are walking in dangerous territory. Don’t be discouraged, because you can do a 180 at any time.

Self awareness is all about being honest with yourself. At the end of the day, you are responsible for your recovery. Remember, recovery is a daily reprieve from active addiction. Recovery is also a daily journey and you won’t always feel great. You know if you’re having difficult moments or feeling cravings. During times like these, reach out for help. Go out of your way to avoid isolation. Recovery is a road best walked with positive friends. The beautiful part of recovery is that there will be many more good days than bad ones.
