Depending on how your sponsor works the steps will decide how you work the steps because they are your tour guide into your program. Some sponsors have their sponsees work the steps every year while other sponsors feel certain that working steps 10, 11, and 12 consistently will keep you current in your step work. The point is to stay up-to-date with your recovery so that you can continue to grow into the person your Higher Power intended you to be.

Step 1 has to be a daily practice if you wish to stay sober. If you get to point of thinking that you are no longer powerless over alcohol or drugs, you will be in a very high risk of relapse. Making the assertion as soon as you wake up that you are powerless can lead you into Steps 2 and 3 to depend on a power greater than yourself to restore you to sanity and build the faith you need to turn your will over daily to your Higher Power. These three steps directly tie into Step 11 because to accomplish Steps 1, 2, and 3, you will need to use prayer and meditation to spiritually connect with a conception of your own understanding to remain sober,

Step 10 is a crucial part of staying current in your steps because if you work a regular tenth step, you are basically incorporating Steps 4 through 9 into your daily living to continue your growth in recovery. Understanding why you are resentful, selfish, dishonest, or fearful will lead you to clean up your side of the street and being honest with your sponsor, or another trusted person so that you can get out all of the feelings or behaviors that you may be suppressing. Your tenth step also gives you an opportunity to see where you were kind and loving towards others and where you were of service to point out where you did good in your day.

Step 12 is the backbone of recovery. If you continue to do Steps 1 through 11, you will inevitably have a spiritual experience that will open you to having more personal knowledge to pass onto others and give you the confidence to help them when you can. With all of the work that you have done on yourself, you will undoubtedly pick up how to better practice the recovery principles in all your affairs.
