5 Ways that Unrealistic Expectations Can Negatively Affect Your Sobriety

Going to any lengths to stay sober does not mean that life will automatically get better. The opposite actually happens quite often in sobriety because you may have to clean up the wreckage of your past first before things improve which can point out your character defects.  During this process, you will realize how your life has been full of unrealistic expectations that have held you back and could negatively affect your sobriety. These unrealistic expectations are common and by pinpointing them for yourself, you will be able to make some positive strides in your recovery.

Stress

If you put too much pressure on yourself to achieve unrealistic expectations, the amount of anxiety that could be provoked might distract you from the bigger picture. Gaining sobriety is already difficult and keeping it simple on your mission to stay sober will take away some of the unnecessary tension.

Conflict

Expecting others to do what you think they should do can give the impression that you are inflexible and intolerable although you may have their best interest at heart. Most people do not want to be told what to do and could fight back during a confrontation caused by your domination of others. Go with the flow and you will surely see how conflict will start to dissipate.

Sabotage

Overwhelming yourself with too high of expectations may keep you from reaching your goals at all. By setting realistic objectives in your sobriety, you will be less likely to feel disappointed when you do not hit your target and give up. Try taking baby steps in what you are aiming for and you will do better at not sabotaging the sobriety that you are working for.

Distraction

There is a process that has to take place when it comes to staying sober and if you are being knocked off track with your high expectations, you may want to rethink what you are doing. Getting pulled in the wrong direction from distractions can lead you closer to a relapse.

Relapse

You could be putting your sobriety in real danger if the expectations you put on yourself are impossible. Be practical in how you go about working your recovery program because the goal of all goals is to stay sober. If you are putting unworkable limits in your life, you are setting yourself up to fail which most likely will include a relapse.

Unintentional burdens are usually the culprit of unrealistic expectations which typically result in making yourself want to feel different through the effects that alcohol and drugs produce. Be kind to your sober self by recognizing which unrealistic expectations you are putting on yourself, so you can enhance the quality of your recovery.
